We were commissioned by the Ashley Vale Action Group (AVAG) to advise on the conversion of the old 1960’s office block on this former industrial site to 6 apartments and a ground floor community facility.
Working with Richard Swann of Bruges Tozer we developed three solutions to achieve increasing levels of energy efficiency and to incorporate appropriate energy systems to supply the building.
The brick and concrete clad reinforced concrete frame is externally insulated with 120mm EPS and rendered. Extensive single glazing has been reduced and replaced with high specification double glazing. A fourth timber framed storey has been added to the roof which also carries solar PV and solar thermal systems. The main heating is provided by twin biomass boilers.
This building won the Regional South West Green Energy Award for ‘Best Housing Scheme’ in 2009.
